I’ll be honest, I almost didn’t write this. I’m traveling, off my routine, trying to limit screen time, and it felt easier to just skip. I told myself, “Skip it, no one will notice.”
But then, this morning, something shifted. I found myself in the flow, and it reminded me: you don’t need a perfect routine or to be perfect to show up. You just need to do it, show up as you are, and stay committed rather than simply consistent. Maybe you need that reminder too.
Right now, it’s 11:42 a.m. where I am, which means it’s 4:42 a.m. back in New York. I’m seven hours ahead, crunching this out, and it reminded me: this isn’t about consistency, it’s about commitment.
People talk about consistency like it's the secret sauce to everything you've ever wanted in life.
We’ve all seen it: people waking up at 5 a.m., sipping their picture-perfect coffee or matcha, eating avocado toast, hitting the gym after their pre-workout, posting content at the same time every week, winding down with the flawless nighttime routine.
And subconsciously, you think: omg it’s so sexy, it’s so hot, it’s so put together…. I need to do this.
But here’s the truth: consistency cracks easily. One missed alarm, one flight delay, one sick kid, one stressful day at work, and suddenly it all falls apart. You feel defeated.
And that’s when the guilt spiral kicks in. You miss one workout, one day of clean eating, one day of writing, and suddenly it feels easier to quit altogether. Not because you stopped caring, but because shame creeps in. You tell yourself you failed, and failure convinces you it’s not even worth trying again.
Commitment is different. Commitment is tied to your why. It’s about showing up, even when the system isn’t perfect, even when the streak breaks, even when you’re off-routine or, in my case, traveling and tempted to skip.
Consistency is about checking boxes. Commitment is about remembering why those boxes matter in the first place.
And this is something I’ve been sitting with while I travel: what matters more to me — never breaking the streak, or staying committed to my mission of building, writing, and sharing tools that help people like you? The streak feels good, but it’s shallow. The commitment is what actually moves the needle and feels aligned and genuine.
That’s the Mentally Fit skill: knowing how to adapt when life doesn’t go according to plan, and still finding a way to show up.
Because:
- Consistency is about effort.
- Commitment is about impact.
When you’re truly committed, consistency becomes the tool, not the goal. And that commitment actually makes you more consistent over time, because you’re not crushed when life throws you off course. You adjust. You continue on.
So here’s my ask: before you chase another “perfect routine” or beat yourself up for falling off, pause and ask yourself:
- Am I committed to this?
- Does this actually matter to me?
- Does this fit into my lifestyle and feel like something I want to do, not something I’m forcing myself to do?
If yes, keep going. Find your way back, even if it’s messy, imperfect, or last-minute. If no, it’s time to commit to something that does.
Commitment gives meaning to consistency. Without it, you’re just checking boxes.
